Black Friday 5K Run or Walk – Improve Your Health and the NEK Economy!

Want to put a healthy spin on Black Friday?  Well, thanks to St. Johnsbury Academy and the St. Johnsbury Chamber of Commerce, this Black Friday 2011, you can get fit and help the local NEK economy with the first ever “Black Friday 5K Run / Walk.”

The fun run/walk happens on November 25th at 9am. Registration is available at the St. Johnsbury Recreation site or at the race (8:15-8:30 a.m.).  The event will be held at the St. Johnsbury Welcome Center on Railroad Street. The course is a flat and fast “out and back” that follows Bay Street to Rt. 5 South, just past the Comfort Inn.  Registration is $10 adults/$5 kids.  You immediately get your registration fee back in the form of Kingdom Cash, which you can spend at NEK businesses.

“What makes this event truly unique is the fact that runners and walkers will have their entry fee converted into ‘Kingdom Cash’ upon registration by representatives of Union Bank,” said Joe Fox, director of community recreation at St. Johnsbury Academy. Kingdom Cash is essentially a gift certificate that can be used just like cash at many downtown retailers and businesses. “In this one event you can literally improve your health and the health of our local economy. As corny as it sounds, this is our attempt to brighten up Black Friday,” said Fox.

Registration for the event is $10 for adults and $5 for children. “When you hand us $10 at registration, we’ll give you $10 back; with the only catch being you have to spend it here in the Kingdom,” Fox said.
